Tooth Sensitivity

Short, sharp pain, usually initiated by eating hot or cold foods or exposure to cold air is more common than one may think. In fact, tooth sensitivity affects at least 40 million adults in the United States at some point in their lives. While it may comfort you to know you’re not alone, you may be asking, “Why are my teeth sensitive?”

For the most part, the consumption of acid-containing foods and drinks, such as citrus juices, fruits, and sodas will put you at risk for tooth sensitivity. Acid reflux and bulimia are also conditions that will cause your teeth to become sensitive.

Consider the hard outer enamel of your tooth. Acidic substances can wear away, causing it to break down. Below this layer is a special tissue called dentin. As the hard layer vanishes, gums usually recede as well. This exposes the dentin on the tooth and along the root and gum line. Fluid and air will begin to flow within the tiny tubes in the tissue. Over time, this causes pain, and will affect eating, drinking, and even breathing habits.

What Can I Do About My Sensitive Teeth?

While it’s best to consult a dental professional about your tooth sensitivity, there are a few personal habits that may reduce your pain.

Aside from cutting back on acidic foods and beverages, consider which type of toothpaste you’re using. For instance, tarter-control toothpastes are generally known to have ingredients that are harsh for sensitive teeth. You may find that by simply switching to desensitizing toothpaste, you can reduce your tooth sensitivity.

Also, take a look at your toothbrush. Are the bristles pointing in many different directions? If so, this is a clear sign that you’re brushing too hard. Brushing too hard with a hard-bristled toothbrush can do more harm than good.

See Your Dentist!

While a few changes to your diet and personal hygiene may help tooth sensitivity, it’s imperative to see your dentist. Sensitivity may mean different things to a patient versus a dental professional. In other words, there may be an underlying issue that needs to be assessed. A complete diagnostic examination of your teeth and gums, including personal habits and health history must be taken into account.
